With computers the term servers can refer to a number of things, but ultimately it is a form of host that is used to run a number of programmes off it. There are a number of companies who offer servers out for rent, this therefore means that the server is detached from the clients computer, therefore it is also used as a backup. A server can either be one computer or depending on the size of server the client needs a number of computers can be used by linking the computers together through electronic devices.
Servers are useful for a number of other services too; these can be used by small businesses and larger businesses through the internet. For example when you use a search engine, and your result pages come up, this information is then sent through the internet through to your servers and they are saved on your data base for you to access at any time. You are also get a server that has a particular specific usage for example; print servers, web servers and database servers, although all of them will provide you with other services as well. Businesses tend to use Enterprise servers that are a lot larger and offer a number of services.
As the term server is used so much in the world of computers an easy way of explaining it is the process of sharing resources to one or more customer. For example processes such as file sharing, the element of the operating system that transfers and shared these files between them is the server. You are also able to get web server applications, these can be used on your own computers as a smaller server as these operate through the web, they can be used specifically for smaller scale server needs.
Essentially although servers are designed for specific reasons and are made to work on maximum efficiency for specific areas, they just look like any other computer. The only real difference is that inside they are programmed with software that makes them more enhanced to be able to complete the necessary server capabilities. Some of the programmes that are used on server computers include high speed hard drive disks, high speed network connects etc.
The differences between servers are simply through the use of different software programmes that are loaded onto the system. Here is how the different kinds of servers vary;
