Web hosting is a service provided by an internet hosting service, this can be given to individuals or businesses that want to make their website accessible to users on the internet. Web hosting can be done on a number of levels, for example, the most basic form of web hosting is a web page with a small scale form of file hosting. This small scale file hosting allows a client to upload a file onto the page through a FTP, file transfer protocol or a web interface programme. Due to this file transferring being fairly simple and quick you will find that a number of web hosting companies will offer you it for free.

One of the things that is useful to look out for when looking at what web hosts to go with is their uptime. This uptime refers to the percentage of time that the host is up and connected to the internet, all hosts will have a certain amount of time when they have to be down to run checks through their servers, but you need to make sure you are going with the one that is the fastest at running these checks. On average you will find that most web hosts will be up around 99.9& of the time, this should mean they are down for around 45 minutes a month.

There is a number of different forms of web hosting available here are some examples of the web hosting you can get, and which will be the most suited to you and your individual, or business's needs;

  • Free web hosting - this is offered by a number of companies but will give you limited services, you are often able to get supported by advertisements but it is still very limited.
  • Reseller web hosting - this allows the customers to become hosting providers themselves. This works by the client renting out part of their web space on the server, often domain names will be fairly similar as will the hosting plan they provide them with, the only real difference will be that the client will provide any technical support they might need.
  • Shared web hosting - this is when a client approaches a hosting company and will get a place on their server along with the rest of their other clients. These sites will all receive the same support and server resources.
  • Managed hosting service - this is when a user gets to have with own web server but they don't have full control over it. This therefore meaning they rent the server rather than owning it.
